How far in advance should I book a Mentawai surf trip? For a June to August land camp, book at least 3 to 6 months ahead. For a specific charter boat in peak season, start 6 to 12 months out, or 12 to 18 months for fixed dates and large groups. Shoulder and wet-season trips can often be booked a few weeks to two months ahead.

Booking lead time in the Mentawais is driven by two things: how many beds or cabins a trip has, and how many people want the same weeks. Camps and boats are small, often taking somewhere between a handful and a couple of dozen surfers. When the best swell months come round, the good options go first. This guide answers how far in advance you should book a Mentawai surf trip for each season and trip type, when deals tend to appear, and what to lock in first.

How far in advance should I book a Mentawai surf trip? The short table

Trip and timing Suggested lead time Why
Land camp, June to August 3 to 6 months (2 to 3 months minimum) Peak swell months fill first, especially single rooms
Specific charter boat, June to August 6 to 12 months One boat, one departure, limited cabins
Fixed dates, large group or popular boat 12 to 18 months You need the whole camp or whole boat
Shoulder months (April to May, September to October) 1 to 3 months Good surf, less demand
Wet season (November to March) A few weeks to 2 months More availability and more chance of offers

These are planning guidelines, not operator rules. One camp may still have a room in July two months out, while a popular boat may be full more than a year ahead. Ask early if your dates cannot move.

Why peak season books out early

The Mentawai main season runs roughly April to October, and the most reliable large swells usually arrive between June and August. That window overlaps with northern-hemisphere summer holidays and Australian winter, so demand peaks at the same time the waves do. Camps and boats have fixed capacity, so there is no extra supply when demand rises. Our Mentawai surf season page explains the month-by-month swell pattern.

What is the best time to book a Mentawai surf package?

The best time to book a Mentawai surf package depends on what matters most to you.

If you want the best choice

Book as soon as you know your dates. For peak months, that usually means six months or more ahead. Early bookers get the room type, cabin and departure they want.

If you want a deal

Operators publish early-bird specials and off-season or shoulder-season discounts, but there is no fixed annual release date. Start checking around 6 to 12 months before travel, and again when shoulder and wet-season dates are released. Discounts are usually limited and disappear as dates fill.

If you are flexible

Last-minute trips are realistic outside peak season. If you can travel at short notice and follow the swell, our guide to last-minute Mentawai surf trips covers how to approach it.

The order to book things in

  1. Accommodation or boat first. It has the least availability and sets your dates, including the ferry day your camp uses.
  2. Flights to Padang second. Build in a night in Padang before the crossing and a buffer night on the way home.
  3. Insurance third. Buy it once you have paid a deposit, so cancellation cover applies from that point.
  4. Ferry tickets last. If your package does not include them, fast-ferry tickets are usually sold at the Muaro Padang counter, often the day before. Your operator can advise on the current process.

Our Mentawai surf trip booking guide covers each step and the checks to make before you confirm.

Deposits and payment timing

Paying a deposit is what actually holds your place. Typical terms seen in 2025 and 2026 include:

  • A deposit of around 30 to 50 percent of the package price to confirm the booking.
  • The balance due anywhere from about 7 to 30 days before arrival, depending on the operator.
  • Cancellation terms that become stricter as the travel date approaches.

Read the cancellation and weather policy before paying. Ask what happens if a ferry is cancelled, if the swell does not show, or if you need to change dates. Terms vary considerably between operators.

How booking early affects the total price

Booking early rarely changes the headline nightly rate, but it changes the total. You get the room or cabin type you want instead of an upgrade, you can book flights while fares are lower, and you are more likely to secure early-bird offers. For a breakdown of what a full trip typically costs, see our Mentawai surf holiday price guide.

Lead time by group size

Who you travel with changes the answer as much as the month does.

  • Solo surfers can sometimes slot into a shared room or a spare cabin at short notice, but single rooms are scarce and often go first. If you want your own room in peak season, book earlier than a couple would.
  • Couples and pairs have the most flexibility, because a double room or a two-berth cabin is the most common unit.
  • Groups of four to eight should plan further ahead, since you need several rooms on the same dates or a large share of a boat.
  • Full-boat or full-camp groups are effectively booking an entire departure. For peak months this is where the 12 to 18 month lead time applies.

Common timing mistakes

  • Booking flights before the camp. Camps work on fixed transfer days tied to the ferry. Flights first can leave you a day early or late.
  • Waiting for a forecast in peak season. Swell forecasts are reliable about a week or so out, which is too late for June to August.
  • Booking too short a stay. Swell comes in pulses. Ten nights or more gives you a better chance of catching a good one.
  • No return buffer. Weather can delay boats. One spare night in Padang protects your international flight.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book a Mentawai surf trip a month before?

Often yes in the shoulder or wet season. For June to August it is possible but your choice will be limited, and popular boats are likely to be full.

When do Mentawai charter boats book out?

Popular boats in peak season can fill a year or more ahead. Availability is boat- and date-specific, so send your dates to check rather than assuming.

Is it cheaper to book last minute?

Sometimes, outside peak season, when operators release limited offers. In peak season, last-minute bookings are rarely cheaper and options are fewer.

Should I wait for the swell forecast before booking?

Only if you are flexible and travelling in the shoulder or wet season. For peak months, book ahead and choose a longer stay to cover the swell pulses.

Are deposits refundable?

It depends on the operator. Many deposits are non-refundable or only partly refundable. Read the terms and pair your booking with suitable insurance.
