A Macaronis surf package is a Mentawai trip built around Macaronis, the left-hand reef off Silabu Island near North Pagai. Most are a land stay on Silabu with a short boat ride to the wave, or a surf charter that anchors there. Expect a full travel day from Padang, and plan for the April to October season, when May to September brings the most reliable swell.

Macaronis is one of the few Mentawai waves that surfers name before they name the islands. It is a long, fast, very consistent left that wraps along a coral reef and throws up wall after wall of rippable face. Because so many people want it, the Macaronis surf package has become its own small category: a trip planned around one wave, with the travel, accommodation and boat time arranged so you spend as many sessions there as the swell allows. This page explains how those packages are put together, what they usually include, what they cost in broad terms, and how to choose between staying on land and arriving by boat.

We are an independent planning guide. We do not own resorts or boats. We help travellers compare options and connect with operators that match their dates, budget and surfing level.

Where Macaronis is and why it shapes the package

Macaronis sits off Silabu Island, at the southern end of North Pagai (Pagai Utara), in the southern part of the Mentawai chain. That location matters for planning. The southern Mentawais are further from Padang than Sipora, and fewer scheduled boats go there, so the route usually runs Padang to Sikakap by fast ferry and then about an hour by speedboat to the Silabu side. Door to door from Padang, most travellers should treat it as a full travel day of roughly eight to twelve hours, depending on the vessel, the sea and the connection.

The wave itself is a left-hander over coral. At two to three feet it is friendly enough for competent intermediates. In the three to six foot range, on a south to southwest groundswell with an easterly or southeasterly breeze, it becomes the fast, hollow and very long wave that appears in surf films. Bigger swells make it far more serious, with shallow reef and quick barrel sections. Nearby waves in the Pagai and Silabu area include Thunders, a powerful left for advanced surfers, and Greenbush, a heavy, shallow left that suits experts only.

Who a Macaronis package suits

  • Intermediate surfers who can pick a line on a fast wall and want a consistent left.
  • Advanced surfers who want a reliable base with heavier options close by on bigger days.
  • Goofy-footers chasing frontside rides, and regular-footers working on backhand.
  • It is not a learn-to-surf trip. Beginners are better served on Sipora, where some camps have softer inside waves.

The two main types of Macaronis surf package

There are two realistic ways to surf Macaronis on a package: stay on land close to the wave, or join a boat that visits it as part of a wider route. Each has a clear set of trade-offs.

Factor Land-based stay on Silabu Surf charter visiting Macaronis
Time at Macaronis High. The break is a short boat shuttle away, often quoted at 10 to 15 minutes. Variable. The captain moves with the swell, so Macaronis may be one stop among several.
Wave variety Mostly Macaronis plus nearby Pagai-area breaks reachable by the camp boat. Wider. A charter can chase different breaks across the chain.
Comfort Stable beds, steady meals, space for non-surfing partners. Compact cabins, motion on the water, close quarters with the group.
Crowd exposure Shared with other guests and any visiting boats. Shared with the land camp and other boats when you anchor there.
Best for Surfers who want maximum hours on one great left. Groups who want to roam and are comfortable on boats.

If your main goal is to surf Macaronis as many times as possible, a land stay is the more direct choice. If you want Macaronis as a highlight on a wider Mentawai trip, compare surf charters that list the southern islands on their routes.

What a Macaronis surf package usually includes

Inclusions vary by operator, so read every quote line by line. Most land-based packages near Macaronis cover the following:

  • Accommodation for the agreed number of nights, shared or private.
  • Three meals a day, and often drinking water, tea and coffee.
  • Boat shuttles to the break, sometimes with set session times.
  • Surf guiding or at least a staff member who knows the reef and the tides.
  • Transfers on set ferry days between Padang, Sikakap and the camp, depending on the package.

Items that are often extra, or worth checking, include the Mentawai surf levy, Padang hotel nights, boardbag fees on the ferry, alcohol, Wi-Fi, massage, and trips to other breaks further afield. Insurance with medical evacuation cover is commonly required. Ask whether government tax and service charge are already in the rate, because some resorts in the region quote rates before those charges.

What a Macaronis surf package costs

Prices change by season, room type, group size and booking date, so treat the following as planning guidance for 2026 rather than a quote. The land-based resort on Silabu has published a surfer rate of around US$225 per night, which works out to roughly US$1,500 to US$1,600 per person for a week before any discounts, taxes or transfers. It has also advertised discounts for early booking and longer stays. Charter berths that include Macaronis are priced per person per trip and vary widely with the boat’s size and level of comfort.

On top of the package, budget for international flights to Padang, at least one Padang hotel night, and the surf levy. Under a 2024 regional regulation, foreign surfers pay Rp2,000,000 per surfer for each 15-day period. Some operators collect it for you; others ask you to pay it through the official system. Make sure you do not pay it twice. For a broader view of price bands, see our breakdown of the full Mentawai surf holiday price.

When to book a Macaronis surf package

Macaronis works through much of the year because it picks up a wide range of swell, but the odds change by month.

Period Typical conditions Who it suits
March to April Shoulder season. Swell building, often 3 to 6 feet, winds shifting toward the southeast. Intermediates who want good waves with fewer people.
May to September Main season. Consistent southwest groundswell, often 4 to 8 feet, with larger pulses mid-year. Intermediate to advanced surfers; the most popular weeks.
October to November Shoulder. Smaller on average, variable winds, solid swells still possible. Surfers who prefer fun-sized waves and quieter lineups.
December to February Wetter, smaller and less consistent, roughly 2 to 4 feet. Flexible travellers looking for value and low crowds.

These are broad patterns, not forecasts. For a month-by-month view, read our Mentawai surf season package guide. For peak weeks from June to August, many travellers reserve six to twelve months ahead, because a single land camp near one famous wave has a fixed number of beds.

How to choose the right Macaronis surf package

  1. Be honest about your level. If you are a solid intermediate, plan for the shoulder months or the smaller end of the main season. If you are advanced, the peak months give you Macaronis plus the heavier nearby waves.
  2. Decide land or boat. Choose land for time at one wave and comfort. Choose a charter for variety and the chance to escape other surfers.
  3. Check the transfer days. Ferries to Sikakap do not run every day. Your package dates should match a real sailing, with a spare buffer day in Padang if possible.
  4. Read the inclusions. Confirm meals, boats, guiding, transfers, tax, service charge and the surf levy in writing.
  5. Look at the cancellation terms. Deposits of 30 to 50 percent are common in the Mentawais, and some operators treat payments as non-refundable. Buy insurance as soon as you pay.

Getting the most from a week at Macaronis

A package buys you access. How many good waves you ride depends on a few habits that experienced visitors share.

  • Surf the tide, not the clock. The wave changes character through the tide. Ask your guide or the camp which tide suits the swell that week and plan sessions around it rather than around meals.
  • Go early on busy days. In peak season, visiting charter boats can arrive mid-morning. Land guests who paddle out at first light often get the quietest hour of the day.
  • Use the other waves. When Macaronis is crowded or out of sorts, nearby breaks can be better. A package with boat access to more than one wave protects your week.
  • Bring the right boards. A standard shortboard covers most days; a slightly longer step-up helps on bigger swells. A spare board is sensible, because there is no surf shop at the reef.
  • Look after reef cuts. The reef is shallow on the inside. Clean any cut the same day and keep it dry where you can.

Respect the lineup. Macaronis is shared by camp guests, charter guests and local surfers, and a calm, patient approach usually earns more waves than hustling.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Macaronis surf package good for beginners?

Not usually. Macaronis breaks over shallow coral and becomes fast and hollow as the swell rises. Competent intermediates can enjoy it at two to three feet, but true beginners should look at Sipora-based camps with softer inside waves and coaching.

How long does it take to get to Macaronis from Padang?

Plan on a full travel day. The usual route is a fast ferry from Padang to Sikakap followed by about an hour by speedboat. Allow roughly eight to twelve hours in total, and expect weather or ferry changes now and then.

How much does a week at Macaronis cost?

As a 2026 planning guide, a land-based week near Macaronis has been listed at around US$1,500 to US$1,600 per surfer before discounts, taxes and transfers. Flights, Padang hotels and the surf levy are extra. Prices vary by operator and season.

Can I surf Macaronis on a boat trip instead?

Yes. Many Mentawai charters include the southern islands. The trade-off is that the captain follows the swell, so you may surf Macaronis for a session or two rather than every day.

What is the best month for Macaronis?

The main season runs April to October, and May to September brings the most reliable groundswell. June to August is often the biggest and busiest period. April and October can be excellent for intermediates who want slightly smaller waves.

Is Macaronis crowded?

It can be in peak season, when land guests and visiting charter boats share the wave. Surfing at first light, travelling in the shoulder months and choosing a package with boat access to nearby breaks all help.
