How much does it cost to travel to the Mentawai Islands? Excluding international flights, independent travellers can get by on roughly USD 40 to 80 a day, while surf camp and resort packages typically run USD 135 to 800 or more per person per night in 2026. Fixed costs include the Padang ferry (about IDR 350,000 each way) and, for surfers, a IDR 2,000,000 levy.

The Mentawais are not expensive to reach once you are in Indonesia. The cost climbs because the islands are remote, most good accommodation is sold as a package, and boats burn fuel. This guide lists every line item you are likely to pay, in the order you will meet it, with typical 2026 ranges and the places travellers most often underbudget. All figures are indicative: prices vary by operator, season and exchange rate, and you should treat them as planning numbers rather than quotes.

Step one: getting to Padang

Every trip starts at Padang’s Minangkabau International Airport in West Sumatra. Most international travellers fly into Jakarta and connect on a short domestic hop. Some carriers list direct routes from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, which can save a night, but frequencies change between seasons. Because international fares depend so heavily on where you start and when you book, we do not give a single figure here. Price this leg first, since it is usually the largest single cost for travellers from Europe or the Americas.

There is currently no reliable scheduled passenger flight from Padang into the islands. Treat the sea crossing as part of the plan and budget for a hotel night in Padang on each side.

Step two: the crossing

The Mentawai Fast ferry is the main option for visitors. It departs Muaro Padang harbour early in the morning and reaches Tuapejat on Sipora in about three to four hours, with separate sailings to Maileppet on Siberut. Published fares for foreign passengers have been around IDR 350,000 one way, roughly USD 20 to 25 depending on the exchange rate. Sailings run on set days of the week rather than daily, so the ferry often decides your arrival date.

The slower overnight ferries leave from Teluk Bungus, a different port, and take around 12 hours. Fares are much lower, but the timetable is irregular and less practical for a short holiday. Our guide to the Padang to Mentawai transfer covers both options in more detail.

Step three: where you stay decides most of the budget

Independent travel

If you are not surfing, you can stay in a homestay or guesthouse around Tuapejat for about USD 10 to 30 a room, eat at local warung for a few dollars a meal and keep daily spending to roughly IDR 500,000 to 1,200,000 per person. Boat trips are the cost that breaks this budget, because hiring a boat for the day is far cheaper when shared.

Surf camps and resorts

Surfers almost always book a package, because the waves are reached by boat and camps bundle boats, meals and guiding. Budget camps start around USD 135 to 200 per person per night, mid-range camps around USD 285 to 500, and premium resorts USD 350 to 800 or more. Our Mentawai surf holiday price page shows how those rates add up into a full trip budget from different departure countries.

Culture trips on Siberut

Guided cultural treks on Siberut, staying with a family in a traditional uma, are sold as short packages. Published 2026 examples range from roughly USD 215 to 700 per person for three to seven days, depending on group size and what is included. Compare options in our budget Mentawai island tour guide.

Sample budgets for a 10-day trip

These examples exclude international flights and are built from the typical ranges above. Your real total depends on operator, season and group size.

  • Independent, non-surfing: two Padang nights, return fast ferry, seven nights in Tuapejat homestays, local meals and a couple of shared boat trips. Roughly USD 450 to 900 per person.
  • Budget surf camp: eight nights at around USD 150 per night, two Padang nights, ferry, the surf levy and drinks. Roughly USD 1,500 to 2,000 per person.
  • Premium surf resort: eight to ten nights at around USD 400 to 550, plus levy, transfers not covered by the package, tax and service where applicable. Roughly USD 3,800 to 6,000 per person.
  • Surf charter: USD 1,900 to 4,400 for the boat, plus an extra USD 300 to 700 for the levy, drinks, tips and transfers.

Where travellers underbudget

  • Board bags. Airlines charge sports equipment fees on each sector. With a Jakarta connection, that can mean four charges per trip.
  • Weather buffers. A cancelled sailing means another Padang night. Build in one spare night on the way home.
  • Tax and service. Some premium resorts quote prices before government tax and service charge, which can add around 20 percent combined.
  • Cash. Do not count on ATMs outside Padang. Carry enough rupiah for tips, drinks and small purchases.
  • Insurance. Policies with medical evacuation cost more, and many camps require proof of cover.

Is it cheaper to book everything separately?

For non-surfers, booking independently is usually cheaper. For surfers, it rarely is. Hiring boats day by day to reach the breaks costs more than the boat access built into most camp packages, and remote camps are not set up for walk-in guests. Frequently asked questions

Is the Mentawai Islands an expensive destination?

Getting there is affordable once you reach Indonesia. Surf trips cost more because accommodation, meals and boats come bundled in packages priced for a remote location. Independent non-surfing travel can be quite cheap.

Do non-surfers pay the surf levy?

The levy applies to surfers. Non-surfing partners generally do not pay it, but confirm with your operator because collection methods changed in 2026.

How much cash should I bring?

Enough for drinks, tips, small purchases and an unexpected Padang night. As a rough planning figure, the equivalent of USD 150 to 300 per person in rupiah covers a 10-day stay on top of what is prepaid, but your drinking and tipping habits matter more than any rule of thumb.

Can I fly to the Mentawai Islands?

No reliable scheduled passenger flight currently operates from Padang to the islands. Plan on the fast ferry or a private speedboat.

What is the cheapest month to travel?

The wet season, roughly November to March, usually has the most availability and the best chance of off-season offers. Surf is less consistent in those months.
