Mentawai surf packages are built around four main zones: the Playgrounds between Siberut and Sipora, north Sipora near Tuapejat, south Sipora around Katiet, and the Pagai islands in the south. Each suits a different package. Camps work best when you know the zone you want; charters suit surfers who want to follow the swell across all four.

The Mentawai chain lies roughly 100 to 150 kilometres off the west coast of Sumatra, and the surf is spread along most of its length. Where your camp or boat is based decides which waves you can reach each day, how long the transfer from the ferry takes, and what the package costs. This destination guide explains the main surf zones from a package point of view: what each area offers, which kind of package fits it, and what to ask before you book. It is a planning hub; the linked pages go deeper into prices and booking.

We are an independent planning guide. We do not own camps or boats. We help surfers choose a base and connect with operators that fit.

The four main surf zones at a glance

Zone Character Typical package Transfer from Tuapejat
Playgrounds (between Siberut and Sipora) A dense cluster of rights and lefts, from fun to very heavy Land camps on small islands; charters pass through Often several hours by speedboat
North Sipora Quality lefts and rights close to the main port Land camps and homestays, including budget options Usually the shortest
South Sipora (Katiet area) Fast, hollow waves for experienced surfers Small land camps; charters Longer run down the coast
Pagai islands Long, consistent lefts and some rights Resort and camp stays; charters on southern routes Long; some camps use their own boats from Padang

Transfer times depend on the camp, the boat and the sea. Ask each operator how long their transfer takes on a normal day and how it changes in rough weather.

Playgrounds

The Playgrounds are a group of small islands and reefs between Siberut and Sipora with a high density of breaks in a small area. That density is the selling point: a camp here can usually find a wave that works for most swell and wind combinations within a short boat ride. Several breaks are heavy and shallow, and a few are gentler, which makes the area popular with groups of mixed ability. Packages are mostly land camps on small islands, at budget, mid-range and premium levels, plus charters that stop on their way through. Our Kandui surf package guide covers one of the area’s best-known bases.

North Sipora

North Sipora sits close to Tuapejat, where the fast ferry from Padang arrives. That short transfer is the main package advantage: less time in boats, simpler logistics and the widest range of budgets, including homestays and small family-run camps. The waves include well-known lefts and rights within easy reach. For surfers on a budget, or on a first trip, a north Sipora base is often the most practical choice.

South Sipora

The Katiet area in the south of Sipora is known for fast, hollow waves that reward experienced surfers. Packages here are mostly small land camps close to the reef, plus charters that visit when the swell suits. The appeal for advanced surfers is surfing one quality wave many times rather than travelling between breaks. Our HTs surf package guide explains how land stays and charters compare in this zone.

Pagai islands

North and South Pagai form the southern end of the chain. The area is known for long, consistent lefts that draw goofy-footers in particular, along with some rights. Packages tend to be resort or camp stays close to a specific wave, and charters on southern routes. Because public boats to the Pagais are less regular, many operators run their own transfers. Our Macaronis surf package guide covers the best-known southern base.

Siberut

Siberut is the largest island, better known for rainforest and traditional culture than for surf packages, although waves exist along its coast. Most surfers visit Siberut as an add-on rather than a surf base, often before or after a week on Sipora.

Choosing a zone for your package

If you are… Consider
On a budget or a first trip North Sipora, for short transfers and more low-cost options
A mixed-ability group The Playgrounds, for variety of waves within a short boat ride
Regular-footed and experienced South Sipora or the Playgrounds rights
Goofy-footed and experienced The Pagai islands or the lefts of north Sipora and the Playgrounds
Keen to see as many zones as possible A charter that follows the swell
Travelling with non-surfers A resort or camp with sheltered water and a non-surf programme

Season matters as much as zone. The main swell season runs roughly April to October, with June to August the most consistent and busiest. Smaller months suit intermediates and quieter lineups. If you are still deciding on surf level, our guide to which Mentawai surf package is best for advanced surfers explains how experienced surfers choose between zones and package types.

Questions to ask about any base

  • Which waves does the camp reach on most days, at my level, and how far are they by boat?
  • How many boats does the camp run, and how many surfers share each one?
  • How long is the transfer from Tuapejat or Padang, and is it included?
  • What happens on days when the nearby waves are too big or too small?
  • How far is the nearest clinic, and how are emergencies handled?

A famous wave on a camp’s website does not mean you will surf it every day. Ask which breaks the boats actually visit in your travel month, and how crowded they tend to be.

Getting to any zone

Every zone starts in Padang. Most travellers fly to Padang Minangkabau International Airport through Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur, spend a night in Padang, take the early fast ferry to Tuapejat on Sipora, and then a camp speedboat to their base. Some southern camps and charters run their own boats directly from Padang. There is no dependable scheduled flight to the islands, so plan on boats and keep a buffer night in Padang on the way home.

Respecting the islands

The waves sit next to fishing villages, and many lineups are shared with local surfers. Dress modestly in villages, ask before taking photos of people, take your rubbish back to camp and follow your guide’s advice on the lineup. The surf levy, Rp2,000,000 per foreign surfer per 15 days, is paid to the regency and applies wherever you surf.

Frequently asked questions

Which Mentawai zone is best for a first surf trip?

North Sipora is often the easiest, because the transfer from the ferry is short and there is a wide range of budgets. The Playgrounds also suit mixed groups thanks to the variety of waves nearby.

Can I surf more than one zone on a land-based package?

Usually only within your camp’s boat range. To cover several zones, choose a charter or split your stay between two camps, allowing a travel day between them.

Which zone has the shortest transfer from Padang?

North Sipora, close to Tuapejat where the fast ferry arrives. Southern zones need longer boat transfers unless the operator runs its own boat from Padang.

Are the famous waves included in every package?

No. Each camp reaches the waves within its boat range, and conditions decide which ones are surfable each day. Ask which breaks the boats visit most often in your travel month.
