A typical Mentawai surf holiday price for 10 to 14 days, with a week at a mid-range camp, flights, a Padang hotel, ferries, the surf levy and insurance, is around AUD 4,000 to 7,000 from Australia, GBP 3,000 to 5,000 from the UK, or USD 4,000 to 7,000 from the USA in 2026. Premium resorts push totals higher.
The Mentawai surf holiday price is more than the camp rate. Between your front door and your first wave there are flights, at least one night in Padang, a ferry, a boat transfer, the regional surf levy, insurance and a handful of fees that are easy to forget. This page adds them up for the main departure markets, shows how the total changes with your choice of camp, resort or charter, and points out where travellers commonly overspend or underbudget.

Mentawai surf holiday price by departure country
The ranges below assume a 10 to 14 day trip with seven nights at a mid-range, land-based surf camp. They are planning estimates for 2026, not quotes, and airfares in particular move with season and booking date.
| Departure | Typical return airfare to Padang | Estimated total holiday |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | Around AUD 900 to 1,700 | Around AUD 4,000 to 7,000 |
| Perth | Around AUD 700 to 1,400 | Around AUD 3,800 to 6,700 |
| London | Around GBP 750 to 1,300 | Around GBP 3,000 to 5,000 |
| Los Angeles | Around USD 900 to 1,700 | Around USD 4,000 to 7,000 |
Direct flights to Padang from these cities are generally not available. Most travellers connect through Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur to Padang Minangkabau International Airport. Check whether the fare includes a checked surfboard; low fares often do not.

How your choice of trip style changes the price
Basic camp or homestay
Packaged budget camps run around US$950 to US$1,400 per person per week. With a discounted fare, a basic Mentawai surf holiday can come in below the ranges in the first table. You trade comfort and boat flexibility for savings.
Mid-range camp
The ranges at the top of this page assume this level: air-conditioned rooms, three meals, daily guided boats and transfers on set days. For most surfers it is the best balance of comfort and cost.
Premium resort
Premium resorts run around US$2,450 to US$5,600 per person per week on a shared basis (about US$350 to US$800 a night), and more for private or luxury arrangements. Some quote before an 11 percent government tax and a 10 percent service charge. Totals of USD 7,000 to 8,000 or more are realistic once flights are added.
Surf charter
Charters are priced per berth per trip and vary widely with the boat. They can be good value for a full group that books the whole boat, and expensive for a single surfer joining a high-end vessel.
Where travellers underbudget
- The extra Padang night. Weather or ferry schedule changes can add a night on either end.
- Boardbag fees. Airlines and ferries may charge separately for boards.
- The surf levy. It doubled in 2024. If your camp does not include it, pay it once through the proper channel and keep the receipt.
- Taxes and service charges at premium resorts that quote pre-tax rates.
- Insurance with evacuation cover. Cheaper policies may not cover remote evacuation or surfing injuries.

How season affects the Mentawai surf holiday price
The main swell season runs roughly April to October, with June to August usually the most consistent and the busiest. Those weeks tend to cost the most and sell out first, and airfares can rise with school holidays in some markets. The shoulder months at each end of the season, April to May and September to October, often bring better value with lighter crowds. The wetter months from roughly November to March are the quietest and often the cheapest, with smaller, less consistent surf.
How to keep the total under control
- Price the whole trip, not the camp. Use the cost lines above as a checklist.
- Book early for peak weeks. Six to twelve months ahead is common for June to August.
- Ask what is bundled. Airport pick-up, hotel, ferry and levy can add up to several hundred dollars.
- Travel with a group. Shared rooms and boats cut the per-person price.
- Stay at least a week. The travel days are long, so short trips cost more per surf day.

How payments are usually scheduled
The total is not paid in one go, and the timing matters if you are budgeting month by month. Terms vary by operator, but the pattern across Mentawai camps and charters is consistent enough to plan around.
| Payment | Typical timing | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Camp deposit | On booking, commonly 30 to 50 percent | Whether it is refundable, transferable to new dates, or neither |
| Charter deposit | On booking, often a fixed sum per person or per boat | Whether a whole-boat booking needs a larger deposit |
| Balance | Commonly 30 to 60 days before arrival; some charters ask up to 120 days ahead, some small camps only a week before | The exact date, the currency and any card or transfer fee |
| Flights | When you book them | Board bag allowance on every sector |
| Surf levy | Before or on arrival, unless the package includes it | Who pays it, so you do not pay twice |
| Extras | At the camp, often in cash | Whether cards are accepted; carry rupiah from Padang |
Cancellation terms are often strict. Cancelling well ahead may get a refund less fees or a credit, while cancelling inside the final one to two months often forfeits most or all of what you have paid. That is why insurance is best bought on the day you pay the deposit.
Finding a genuine deal
Real savings on a Mentawai surf holiday come from timing, occupancy and inclusions, not from headline discounts. A few honest ways to pay less:
- Travel in the shoulder months. March to April and October to November often have softer rates and fewer people, with surf that still suits most intermediate and advanced surfers.
- Fill the room or the boat. Twin-share rates and whole-boat charters split between a full crew are where the per-person price drops most.
- Look for late gaps, carefully. Camps and charters occasionally fill a cancelled place at a lower rate close to departure. This suits travellers with flexible dates and flights they can book at short notice.
- Compare door-to-door, not nightly. A cheaper nightly rate that excludes the ferry, Padang hotel and levy can cost more than a higher all-in package.
Be wary of anything sold as a free or heavily discounted surf package with no written inclusions. If a price is far below the ranges on this page, ask exactly what is missing.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I budget for a Mentawai surf holiday?
For 10 to 14 days with a week at a mid-range camp, plan on around AUD 4,000 to 7,000 from Australia, GBP 3,000 to 5,000 from the UK, or USD 4,000 to 7,000 from the USA in 2026. Basic camps cost less and premium resorts more.
Is the Mentawai surf holiday price higher than other surf trips in Indonesia?
Often, yes. The extra flight to Padang, the ferry, the boat-dependent surf and the remote logistics all add cost. Many surfers feel the wave quality and lower crowds justify it.
Are flights included in Mentawai surf packages?
Rarely. Most packages start in Padang or at the island harbour. You book international flights to Padang separately.
When is the cheapest time for a Mentawai surf holiday?
The wetter months, roughly November to March, are usually the quietest and best value, with smaller surf. The shoulder months offer a good compromise between price and waves.
How many days do I need?
Ten to fourteen days is common. Travel to and from the islands can take one to three days each way depending on where you start, so a seven-night surf stay sits inside a longer holiday.
How much deposit do Mentawai surf packages ask for?
Camps commonly ask for 30 to 50 percent when you book, with the balance due 30 to 60 days before arrival. Charters often use a fixed deposit per person or per boat. Read the cancellation clause before you pay.
