A Mentawai surf camp package is a fixed-length land stay, usually seven to fourteen nights, that bundles a room, three meals, guided boat trips to nearby reefs and, at many camps, transfers from Padang. Packages come in basic, mid-range and premium tiers. The tiers differ most in boat access, room comfort and how much of the Padang logistics is included.
Most surfers who visit the Mentawais stay at a land-based camp. A camp package takes the hardest parts of the trip, getting from Padang to the islands and from the camp to the waves, and wraps them into one booking with a single price. This page explains how a Mentawai surf camp package is put together, what a typical week looks like, how the tiers differ, and how to tell whether a package fits your surfing and your travel style.
We are an independent planning guide. We do not own or run camps. We help surfers compare camp packages and connect with operators that fit.
What a Mentawai surf camp package usually includes
| Component | Basic tier | Mid-range tier | Premium tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room | Simple, often fan-cooled, twin share | Air-conditioned, private bathroom | Villa or suite, high comfort |
| Meals | Three local-style meals | Three meals, more choice | Chef-led menus, special diets catered |
| Surf boats | One shared boat, set times | Daily guided trips, often more than one boat | Generous boat access, smaller groups per boat |
| Guiding | Local guide, often on the boat | Guide reading swell, wind and tide | Experienced guides, coaching often available |
| Transfers | Sometimes from the island port only | Usually from Padang on set ferry days | Organised from the airport, sometimes by private boat |
| Non-surf extras | Few | Snorkel gear, fishing trips | Spa, activities for partners and children |
Price is the other big difference between tiers. Our Mentawai surf camp price guide sets out the 2026 ranges for each one.
A typical week on a camp package
- Arrival day in Padang. Airport pickup if included, then a hotel night, because the fast ferry leaves early.
- Transfer day. Fast ferry to Tuapejat on Sipora, about three and a half to four hours, then the camp boat. Some camps are close to the port, others several hours away.
- Surf days. Usually a morning session after an early breakfast, lunch and rest through the heat of the day, and an afternoon session, often at a different break. The guide picks waves to suit the swell, wind and tide.
- Flat or stormy days. Snorkelling, fishing, exploring nearby islands or simply resting.
- Departure. Camp boat to the port, ferry to Padang, and ideally a night in Padang before your flight home.
Most camps fix arrival and departure days around the ferry timetable, which is why packages often run in set blocks of seven, ten or fourteen nights.
How camp packages differ from other Mentawai packages
| Package | Where you sleep | Wave range | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surf camp package | On land, at one base | Waves within the camp’s boat range | Most surfers, mixed groups, non-surfing partners |
| Surf charter | On board | Moves between regions with the swell | Experienced surfers who want variety |
| Homestay, booked separately | On land, simple | Depends on boats you arrange | Groups happy to organise themselves |
Choosing the right camp package
Match the location to your level
A camp is only as good as the waves its boats reach. Ask which breaks the camp surfs most days in your travel month, at your level. A camp beside a heavy, famous wave may not suit an intermediate, while a camp with a mix of softer and heavier waves nearby suits groups of different abilities.
Look closely at the boats
Ask how many boats the camp runs, how many surfers share each one, and whether fuel is included every day. More boats mean more chance of surfing the best wave for the conditions, and of splitting groups by level.
Check what starts in Padang
Some packages start at the airport and include a hotel night, the ferry and the camp boat. Others start at the island port. Compare the full cost from Padang, not the nightly rate.
Think about the people with you
Non-surfing partners and children need a camp with sheltered water, shade and something to do while the boat is out. Ask about non-surfer rates and activities.
What is usually extra
- Flights to Padang and airline board bag fees.
- The surf levy, Rp2,000,000 per foreign surfer per 15 days, unless the package includes it.
- Alcohol, board hire, coaching and video analysis.
- Government tax and service charge at some premium camps.
- Extra Padang nights if flights or ferries change.
- Travel insurance with surfing and evacuation cover.
Minimum stays and package lengths
Many smaller camps set a minimum of around seven nights, and some premium resorts ask for ten or more. Longer packages usually work out better per night, and the surf levy covers fifteen days, so a ten-night stay uses it well. Because swell arrives in pulses, a longer stay also gives you a better chance of catching a good one. When you are ready to reserve, our Mentawai surf camp booking guide covers arrival days, deposits and terms.
Signs of a well-run camp package
- A clear, written list of inclusions and exclusions, with the start point stated.
- Straight answers about which waves the boats visit and how many surfers share each boat.
- Life jackets, a first-aid kit and a means of communication on every boat.
- A stated plan for cancelled ferries and medical emergencies.
- Payment to a business account, with a written confirmation and receipt.
None of these guarantees a perfect week, because the ocean decides that. They do tell you the operator takes the parts it can control seriously.

Frequently asked questions
What is included in a Mentawai surf camp package?
Usually a room, three meals, drinking water and guided boat trips to nearby waves. Many mid-range and premium packages add transfers from Padang. Flights, alcohol and sometimes the surf levy are extra.
How long is a typical surf camp package?
Seven to fourteen nights, often in set blocks that fit the ferry timetable. Ten nights is a popular balance between cost and surf time.
Is a surf camp package better than a charter?
For most surfers and mixed groups, a camp offers more comfort and better options for non-surfers. Charters suit experienced surfers who want to follow the swell between regions.
Can I book a surf camp package without transfers?
Often, yes. Some camps let you arrange your own way to the island port and meet you there. Make sure the meeting point and time are confirmed in writing.
