A Mentawai surf season package is a camp, resort or charter booking timed to a particular part of the year. Peak packages from June to August bring the most consistent swell, the highest demand and the earliest sell-outs. Shoulder packages in March to May and September to November trade some consistency for quieter lineups and better value.
The same camp can feel like a different trip depending on the month you book. Swell size, crowds, prices, boat schedules and even which operators are open all change through the year. This guide looks at the Mentawai surf season from a package point of view: what each part of the year usually offers, how prices and availability shift, which package type suits each season, and how far ahead to book.
We are an independent planning guide. We do not own camps or boats. We help surfers match their dates to the right package and operator.
The Mentawai surf year in three package seasons
| Package season | Months (roughly) | Typical surf | Crowds and demand | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peak | June to August | Most consistent and often biggest swells; south-east trade winds | Highest; popular camps and boats book out early | Advanced surfers who want the most powerful waves |
| Shoulder | March to May, September to November | Building or easing swells; still plenty of quality days | Moderate to low; more choice of dates | Intermediates and experienced surfers who want fewer people |
| Low | December to February | Smaller, less consistent surf; more rain; variable winds | Lowest; some operators reduce services | Beginners, improvers and budget travellers with flexible plans |
These are broad patterns, not forecasts. Good swells arrive outside the peak, and flat spells happen inside it. Conditions also vary between islands and individual reefs.
Peak season packages: June to August
This is when southern hemisphere swells are most frequent and the south-east trade winds most established, grooming many of the best-known reefs. It is the season most experienced surfers aim for, and it shows in the packages.
- Availability. Popular camps and charter boats fill their calendars early, often six to twelve months ahead, and whole-boat charters sometimes further.
- Price. Some camps charge a higher rate in the main swell months, and discounts are rare.
- Crowds. On a good swell several boats and camps can converge on the same famous wave. Packages with flexible boats or a charter help you avoid the busiest lineups.
- Who it suits. Confident reef surfers. Waves on solid days can be heavy and shallow, and the peak is not the best time for a first reef trip.
Shoulder season packages: March to May and September to November
For many surfers the shoulder months are the sweet spot. Swells are building or easing, conditions range from fun to solid, and lineups are noticeably quieter than in July and August.
- Value. Some operators offer lower rates, and you have a wider choice of rooms and dates.
- Crowds. Fewer visiting boats means more waves per session at well-known breaks.
- Who it suits. Intermediates who want quality without the heaviest days, and experienced surfers who would trade a little consistency for space.
- Booking. Two to four months ahead is often enough, although small camps can still fill.
Low season packages: December to February
The wetter months bring smaller, less consistent surf, more rain and more variable winds. That does not make them bad, but it changes what a package is for.
- Who it suits. Beginners and improvers who want smaller waves and quiet lineups, and surfers who are relaxed about conditions.
- Operator changes. Some camps close or run reduced services, and many charters run few trips. Off-season does not always mean cheaper, because some operators price higher per guest when occupancy is low.
- Logistics. Rougher seas cancel more ferries. Build in a buffer night in Padang and keep your dates flexible.
Which package type suits each season
| Package type | Peak | Shoulder | Low |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surf charter | Strongest choice for chasing swell | Good, with more departure dates available | Limited trips; check the boat is operating |
| Land camp near a heavy wave | Excellent, if you book early | Very good; quieter sessions | Often small; better for improvers |
| Camp with softer waves nearby | Good for mixed groups | Very good for intermediates | Best fit for beginners |
| Premium resort | Full and priced at its highest | Good balance of comfort and value | Quiet; check what is running |

Forecasts and timing within a season
Swell arrives in pulses, so a trip of ten days or more gives you a better chance of catching at least one good swell than a short stay. Surf forecasts are useful for choosing boards and setting expectations in the final week, but they are unreliable more than a week or two out, so book on season, not on a long-range forecast. A good package helps more than a lucky forecast: flexible boats, a guide who reads wind and tide, and a camp with options for smaller and bigger days.
Holidays that affect availability
Demand is not driven by surf alone. Mid-year school holidays in Australia and summer holidays in Europe and North America overlap with the peak months and add pressure on camps, boats and flights to Padang. Indonesian public holidays, especially around the end of Ramadan, can fill ferries and Padang hotels with domestic travellers, and the dates move each year. If your trip falls near one of these periods, book transfers and hotels early and ask your operator whether ferry schedules change.
Finding quieter lineups
Crowding is the most common complaint in peak season. The most reliable ways to reduce it are travelling in the shoulder months, choosing a camp close to its main wave so you can surf at first light, picking a package with more than one boat, or joining a charter that will move to a less obvious reef when a lineup fills. Ask any operator directly how they handle busy swells.
How far ahead to book by season
- June to August: six to twelve months for camps; often longer for whole-boat charters.
- March to May, September to November: two to four months is usually enough.
- December to February: a few weeks may do, but confirm the operator is open.
Whatever the season, read the deposit and cancellation terms before paying. Our Mentawai surf trip booking guide explains the usual payment schedule.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best season for a Mentawai surf package?
For experienced surfers, June to August offers the most consistent swell. For value and quieter lineups, the shoulder months are often better. Beginners usually do best in the smaller months.
Are Mentawai surf packages cheaper in the off-season?
Sometimes. Some camps lower rates in the wetter months, but others close or reduce services, and many charters run fewer trips. Compare actual quotes for your dates.
How crowded are the Mentawais in peak season?
Well-known waves can be busy on good swells in July and August. Packages with flexible boats, a camp close to its main wave, or travel in the shoulder months all help.
Do charters run all year?
Many boats focus on roughly March to November and run fewer trips in the wetter months. Check the boat’s schedule before planning a low-season charter.
Should I book based on the surf forecast?
No. Forecasts are unreliable more than a week or two out. Book on the season that suits your level, then use the forecast to fine-tune boards and expectations.
