A typical Mentawai surf camp price in 2026 is around US$950 to US$1,400 per person per week at basic camps, US$2,000 to US$3,500 at comfortable mid-range camps, and US$2,450 to US$5,600 or more at premium resorts. Most include meals, guided boat trips and some transfers. Taxes, the surf levy and flights are often extra.

The Mentawai surf camp price you are quoted depends on three things more than anything else: how comfortable the rooms are, how much boat time is included, and which logistics the camp handles for you. A basic camp and a premium resort may surf the same reef on the same morning, yet charge very different amounts because of what happens either side of the session. This page sets out the price bands for Mentawai surf camp prices in 2026, what each band usually includes, and how to work out the real weekly cost before you book.

We are an independent planning guide. We do not own or run camps. We help travellers compare options and connect with operators that fit their budget and surfing level.

Mentawai surf camp price bands for 2026

The figures below are planning ranges drawn from published operator and travel-site rates. They are not a market tariff. Prices vary by island, season, room type, group size and booking date.

Band Typical price per person per week Typical per night Usually included
Basic homestay or simple surf camp Around US$950 to US$1,400 Around US$135 to US$200 Room, meals, a surf guide and boat access; board hire and the surf levy sometimes included. Air-conditioning, hot water and transfers may not be.
Mid-range surf camp Around US$2,000 to US$3,500 Around US$285 to US$500 Air-conditioned rooms, three meals, daily guided boat trips and usually transfers on set ferry days.
Premium surf resort, shared or group Around US$2,450 to US$5,600 Around US$350 to US$800 High-end rooms, all meals, experienced guides, generous boat access, Wi-Fi and organised transfers.
Premium resort, private or luxury Around US$5,600 to US$8,000 or more Around US$800 or more Private villas or rooms, private boat options and a high level of service.

A room-only homestay booked independently can cost far less, but then you pay separately for meals, boats and transfers. That route is covered in the budget section further down this page.

What changes the Mentawai surf camp price

Boat access

This is the biggest variable. Most Mentawai breaks are reef waves reached by speedboat, often within five to thirty minutes of a camp. “Daily boat trips”, “shared fleet” and “unlimited boat access” mean different things. A camp with several boats and fuel included can take you to the best wave for the swell and wind each day. A camp with one small boat and set times will cost less and offer fewer choices.

Room type and occupancy

Shared rooms are cheapest. Private rooms with en-suite bathrooms and air-conditioning cost more, and solo travellers may pay a single supplement.

Season

Some camps charge more in the main swell season from roughly April to October and offer lower rates in the wetter months. Peak weeks from June to August sell out first. Our Mentawai surf season package guide shows how packages change from month to month.

Transfers and Padang logistics

Some packages include airport pick-up, a Padang hotel, the ferry and the camp boat transfer. Others start at the island harbour. This can be a difference of a few hundred dollars once you add hotel nights, ferry tickets and boardbag fees.

Taxes and service charges

Some premium resorts quote rates before an 11 percent government tax and a 10 percent service charge. Check whether the price you see is final.

Location

Camps near the most famous waves, or in remote southern islands, often cost more to reach and to run.

The real weekly cost: a worked example

To compare quotes fairly, add up everything between Padang and the camp. Using mid-range figures for 2026, a single surfer might plan like this:

Item Planning figure
Mid-range surf camp, 7 nights Around US$2,000 to US$3,500
Padang hotel, 1 to 2 nights Around US$35 to US$150 per night
Return fast ferry, if not included Around US$45 to US$100
Mentawai surf levy Rp2,000,000 per surfer per 15 days (about US$125)
Boardbag fees, drinks, extras Around US$100 to US$400

International flights and insurance come on top. For full door-to-door budgets by country, see our page on Mentawai surf holiday price.

What is usually included, and what is not

  • Usually included: accommodation, three meals, drinking water, guided boat trips to nearby breaks, and transfers on set days.
  • Often included at mid-range and premium camps: airport pick-up in Padang, ferry tickets, Wi-Fi.
  • Often extra: the surf levy, alcohol, board hire, coaching and video analysis, massage, long-range boat trips, laundry.
  • Always check: government tax, service charge, and whether fuel is included for every boat trip.

How to choose the right price level

  1. Match boat access to your level. Advanced surfers who want to chase swells get more value from camps with flexible boats. Intermediates who are happy at one or two breaks can save money.
  2. Decide on comfort honestly. Heat and humidity are real. If you sleep badly without air-conditioning, a basic camp can be a false economy.
  3. Think about who is travelling with you. Non-surfing partners appreciate better rooms, food and activities.
  4. Read the payment terms. Deposits of 30 to 50 percent are common, balances are often due 30 to 60 days before arrival, and some operators treat payments as non-refundable.
  5. Book peak weeks early. For June to August, many travellers reserve six to twelve months ahead.

Below the basic band: budget camps and homestays

If even the basic band is more than you want to spend, there are two cheaper ways to surf the Mentawais. The first is a packaged budget camp: a small, often family-run place, usually on Sipora, that bundles a simple room, meals, a guide and a shared boat into one weekly price at the bottom of the basic range. The second is a room-only homestay with your own boat arrangements. It is cheaper on paper, but you organise everything yourself.

Item Packaged budget camp Homestay plus your own boat
Room Simple, often fan-cooled Basic homestays around Tuapejat and Mapadegat have been listed from roughly Rp300,000 to Rp700,000 a night, room only
Meals Included Sometimes offered; otherwise roughly Rp100,000 to Rp200,000 per person per day
Boat to the waves Shared, at set times Negotiated per day; small local boats have been listed around Rp500,000 to Rp800,000, larger boats much more
Guide Usually included Rarely; you rely on the boat driver
Best for Solo surfers and first-timers Groups of three to six who are happy to organise

The boat is the catch. Most good reefs need one, and a solo surfer on a homestay pays the whole daily boat cost alone, which can wipe out the saving. For one or two people a packaged budget camp is usually cheaper overall. Boat figures above come from local listings, not official tariffs, and fuel, distance and waiting time all change the quote.

What you give up at the budget end

  • Boat flexibility. One small boat and fixed session times mean fewer breaks and less chance to chase the best conditions.
  • Comfort. Fans instead of air-conditioning, simpler bathrooms, limited power and Wi-Fi.
  • Logistics support. You may need to sort your own Padang hotel, ferry tickets and board bag fees.

What you do not give up is the ocean. Budget camps on Sipora sit close to well-known reefs, and on a good swell the waves are the same for everyone. Travelling in the shoulder months of April to May or September to October, sharing rooms and a boat with friends, and staying at least ten nights so the surf levy covers your whole stay are the most reliable ways to bring the weekly cost down.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average Mentawai surf camp price per week?

For a comfortable mid-range camp in 2026, plan on around US$2,000 to US$3,500 per person for seven nights. Basic camps sit lower and premium resorts higher. Prices vary by operator and season.

Why are Mentawai surf camp prices higher than other parts of Indonesia?

The islands are remote. Fuel, food and building materials arrive by boat, and most waves need a speedboat to reach. Those running costs flow into the nightly rate.

Is the surf levy included in the camp price?

Sometimes. Some camps collect and process it for you; others ask you to pay it through the official system. Confirm in writing so you do not pay twice.

Are cheaper prices available in the off-season?

Sometimes. Some camps reduce rates in the wetter months from roughly November to March, when waves are smaller and crowds are lighter.

What is the cheapest way to surf the Mentawais?

For a group of three to six, a simple homestay on Sipora with a shared local boat. For solo travellers, a packaged budget camp is usually cheaper overall, because the boat cost is spread across all the guests.

Can I reach good waves without a boat?

Rarely. A few waves sit off village beaches, but most well-known reefs are separated by channels, currents and coral. Plan on needing a boat for regular surfing, and ask locally before paddling out anywhere.
