A Mentawai island hopping package links two or more of the main islands, Siberut, Sipora and the Pagais, in one trip. The three realistic formats are a surf charter boat, a land itinerary using scheduled fast boats with a stay on each island, or private speedboat transfers for a group. Public boats run on set days, so keep dates flexible.

The Mentawai chain is made up of four main islands, Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai and South Pagai, plus dozens of smaller islands and islets. Sources put the total at around 70 or more. A Mentawai island hopping package lets you see more than one corner of that chain, whether that means surfing different coastlines, combining rainforest and reef, or simply moving at your own pace. It also asks more of your planning, because the islands are not linked by a turn-up-and-go ferry network. This page sets out the formats that actually work, how long each leg takes and how to build a route that does not fall apart when the weather changes.

We are an independent planning guide. We do not own boats or resorts. We help travellers design routes and connect with operators for each leg.

Three ways to build a Mentawai island hopping package

Format How it works Strengths Limits
Surf charter boat You live on board and the boat moves between islands with the swell. Most flexible for surf; no ferry timetables; access to remote breaks. Cabin living; route follows conditions; less time on land.
Land itinerary with scheduled boats You stay on one island, take a fast boat to the next, and repeat. Lower cost; real time on land and with local communities. Boats run on certain days only; delays are common in rough seas.
Private speedboat transfers A group hires a speedboat for each island-to-island leg. Choose your own timing; good for groups. Expensive for small groups; weather still decides.

Surfers who want to cover the most waves usually choose a boat. See our guide to Mentawai surf charters for how they work. Travellers who want culture, rainforest and a slower pace usually prefer a land itinerary.

Schedules change with weather, vessel availability, holidays and operator decisions. Treat the following as a guide to what exists, and confirm current sailings shortly before travel.

Leg Typical service Typical time
Padang to Tuapejat (Sipora) Fast boat several days a week; slower ASDP ferries on fewer days About 3 to 4 hours by fast boat; slow ferries about 10 to 12 hours
Padang to Siberut Fast boat on certain days, sometimes with a stop at Sikabaluan About 4 hours direct; up to about 7 hours with stops
Tuapejat to Siberut Local fast boat reported on particular days About 1 hour 15 minutes
Padang or Tuapejat to Sikakap (Pagai) ASDP and other public vessels, less frequent and less predictable Varies widely with stops and weather
Short coastal hops Local boats or camp speedboats Minutes to a few hours

Our Mentawai transport guide covers ports, ferry types and how to get from Padang airport to the harbour.

Sample island hopping routes

Siberut and Sipora, 10 to 14 days

The most practical combination. Take the ferry from Padang to Siberut for a guided rainforest and uma stay, cross to Tuapejat on a day the inter-island boat runs, then spend a week at a surf camp on Sipora before the fast boat back to Padang. This route is the basis of most Mentawai surf and culture packages that operators sell.

Sipora and the Pagais, 12 to 16 days

For surfers who want both the central and southern breaks. Surf on Sipora, then move south to the Pagai and Silabu area. Because public links to Sikakap are less regular, many people use a charter or private speedboat for this leg, or return to Padang and travel south separately.

The full chain by charter, 10 to 12 days

A surf charter can move from the Pagais to Sipora and up toward Siberut depending on swell and wind. It is the only format that reliably covers all three areas in one trip.

What a Mentawai island hopping package costs

Costs depend on the format, the season and the size of your group. As planning guidance for 2026:

  • Land stays: basic surf camps run around US$950 to US$1,400 per person per week; mid-range camps around US$2,000 to US$3,500. Siberut cultural trips run around US$215 to US$800 per person for three to five days.
  • Scheduled fast boats: fares from Padang have been around Rp280,000 to Rp350,000 one way, and foreigners may pay different fares.
  • Private speedboats: one surf-travel guide gives a range of roughly US$200 to US$400 per charter for groups of four to six, with fuel, distance, waiting time and weather changing the quote.
  • Surf charters: priced per berth per trip; varies widely with the boat.
  • Surf levy: Rp2,000,000 per foreign surfer per 15 days, wherever you surf in the regency.

Planning rules that save island hopping trips

  1. Plan around the boat, not the calendar. Find out which days each leg sails, then fit your stays between them.
  2. Add buffer days. At least one, ideally two, across the trip. Rough seas cancel sailings.
  3. Keep it to two or three bases. More moves mean more travel days and more risk.
  4. Use local contacts. Guesthouses, camps and guides know the current timetable better than any website.
  5. Travel light where you can. Small boats and beach landings are easier with less luggage, though surfboards need proper bags.
  6. Get insurance with evacuation cover. You will be far from hospitals on most legs.

Quick facts

  • Main islands: Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai, South Pagai.
  • Total islands and islets: around 70 or more, depending on the source.
  • Most practical pairing: Siberut and Sipora.
  • Tuapejat to Siberut: about 1 hour 15 minutes on days the fast boat runs.
  • Least predictable links: to and from Sikakap in the Pagais.
  • Most flexible format for surfers: a surf charter boat.

Frequently asked questions

Is island hopping in the Mentawais practical without a boat charter?

Between Siberut and Sipora, yes, if your dates are flexible and you confirm sailings locally. Links to the Pagai islands are less predictable, so many travellers use a charter or private speedboat for that leg.

How many islands can I visit in two weeks?

Two main islands is comfortable on a land itinerary. Three is possible with a charter or private boats. Trying to do more usually means more time travelling than surfing or exploring.

Can I island hop during the wet season?

You can, but sailings are more often delayed by rough seas. Build in extra buffer days and keep the route simple.

Do I need to book each leg in advance?

Book your camps, tours and any charter in advance. Public fast-boat tickets are usually bought closer to departure, but confirm the schedule with your accommodation a few days ahead.

Is there a flight between Padang and the Mentawais?

A regular flight to Rokot on Sipora was not operating in 2025. Plan around ferries and speedboats unless an airline confirms a current schedule.
