Do Mentawai surf packages include transfers from Padang? Many land camp packages do, typically covering airport pickup, a Padang hotel night, the fast ferry to Tuapejat and a speedboat to camp. Some start only at the island port, and private direct speedboats are usually an extra. Charters normally include the transfer from your Padang hotel or the airport to the harbour.

The trip from Padang to your camp is the part of a Mentawai holiday that varies most between operators, and it is easy to misread a quote. “Transfers included” can mean anything from a full door-to-door service to a speedboat from the island port. This guide explains whether Mentawai surf packages include transfers from Padang, the common transfer setups, what usually costs extra, and a checklist to confirm before you pay.

Do Mentawai surf packages include transfers from Padang? The common setups

Setup How it works Usually included?
Full transfer package Airport pickup at Padang, hotel night, fast ferry to Tuapejat, camp speedboat Included in many camp packages
Ferry plus island pickup You reach Padang and the ferry yourself; camp meets you at Tuapejat or Siberut Island leg included; Padang leg on you
Private speedboat from Padang Direct boat from Padang to camp, around 3.5 hours for some camps Usually an upgrade, priced per boat
Separately priced resort transfer Resort runs its own return transfer for a set fee Charged on top of the package at some resorts
Surf charter Pickup at the airport or hotel, then to the harbour to board Usually included in the charter price

The standard route, step by step

1. Arrival in Padang

All trips start at Padang’s Minangkabau International Airport. If your package includes an airport pickup, a driver meets you and takes you to a hotel for the night before the crossing. If it does not, taxis and ride-hailing apps are the usual alternative.

2. The fast ferry

The Mentawai Fast ferry leaves Muaro Padang harbour early in the morning and reaches Tuapejat on Sipora in roughly three to four hours. Separate sailings serve Maileppet on Siberut. Published fares for foreign passengers have been around IDR 350,000 one way, and luggage can cost extra. Ferries run on set days, which is why most camps have fixed arrival days.

3. The camp speedboat

At Tuapejat or Siberut, camp staff meet the ferry and take you on by speedboat. The time depends on where the camp is: some are close, while Playgrounds camps can be around three to four hours from Tuapejat.

4. Returning

The same steps run in reverse. Plan one night in Padang before your flight home, because weather can delay or cancel sailings.

Slower overnight ferries also run from Teluk Bungus on fewer days. They are cheaper but take around ten to twelve hours, so most surf packages use the fast boat.

Private speedboats: when they make sense

Some camps offer a private boat directly from Padang, avoiding the ferry schedule and the Padang hotel night on arrival. It is faster and more flexible, but it is priced per boat rather than per person. One camp, for example, publishes rates of roughly AUD 2,500 to 5,000 return per boat depending on group size, and long-distance private charters elsewhere in the islands are often quoted around USD 2,000 one way. Split across six to ten surfers, that can be reasonable. For a solo traveller or a couple, the ferry is usually the sensible choice. Fuel surcharges and scheduling limits can apply.

Charters: a different model

Charter boats usually depart from a Padang harbour. Most charter prices include the pickup from the airport or your hotel and the transfer to the boat, so there is no ferry or island speedboat to arrange. You still pay for your own flights and any Padang hotel nights outside the charter dates.

Board bags and luggage on the transfer

Surfboards are the part of the transfer most likely to cause surprises. Airlines charge sports equipment fees per sector, so a route through Jakarta can mean a charge on each flight in each direction. On the ferry, oversized luggage may be charged separately. On camp speedboats and private boats, space is limited, and some operators set a maximum number of boards per guest. Ask three things before you travel: how many boards the package allows, whether ferry luggage fees are covered, and whether the camp stores boards securely on the way back if you arrive at the port early. Pack boards in a padded travel bag with fin plugs removed, because boat transfers are often wet and bumpy.

What is usually not included

  • International and domestic flights to Padang
  • Airline sports equipment fees for board bags
  • Extra Padang nights caused by flight times or weather delays
  • Ferry luggage fees above the allowance
  • Private speedboat upgrades
  • The Mentawai surf levy, IDR 2,000,000 per foreign surfer for each 15-day period, unless the package states otherwise

Checklist: confirm these before you pay

  1. Is the airport pickup in Padang included, both ways?
  2. Is a Padang hotel night included, and on which dates?
  3. Are fast-ferry tickets included, and who buys them?
  4. Is the speedboat from the island port to camp included both ways?
  5. How many boards and bags does the transfer allow?
  6. What happens if a ferry is cancelled: who pays for the extra night?
  7. Is there a fuel surcharge on any leg?

Getting these answers in writing makes quotes comparable. A package that includes the whole chain can work out cheaper than a lower headline rate that starts at the island port. Our Mentawai surf camp price guide shows how transfer inclusions shift the real cost,, including the budget camps that still bundle transfers.

How transfer inclusions affect your total

Take two quotes for the same ten nights. Camp A charges a little more per night but includes airport pickup, a hotel night each way, ferry tickets and the speedboat. Camp B is cheaper per night but starts at Tuapejat. For Camp B you add two Padang hotel nights at around USD 25 to 90 per room, return ferry tickets at around IDR 700,000, airport taxis and possibly luggage fees. The gap between the two headline prices can shrink or disappear. Always compare the full door-to-door cost.

Ferry days, routes and board fees in more detail

Timetables change with vessel maintenance and the weather, so treat these as the usual pattern rather than a fixed schedule, and confirm with your camp a few days before you travel.

Route Usual pattern Crossing time
Padang to Tuapejat, Sipora Around three to four fast sailings a week; published days have varied between seasons About 3.5 to 4 hours, longer with stops
Padang to Maileppet, Siberut Around three fast sailings a week, often early morning About 4 hours direct, up to around 7 with a stop at Sikabaluan
Teluk Bungus slow ferries Fewer days, overnight Around 10 to 12 hours

Board bags on the fast ferry are usually charged by weight. One published tariff runs from about Rp230,000 for a bag up to 15 kilograms to around Rp690,000 for one over 26 kilograms, and other operators quote a flat fee per bag. Packing two or three boards in one well-padded bag is usually cheaper than several single bags.

There is no dependable scheduled flight to the islands. Rokot airport on Sipora has had services on and off in the past, but current reports point to irregular charter flights only, so plan on the ferry or a private boat. Frequently asked questions

Do all Mentawai surf camps include the ferry?

No. Many do, but some start their package at the island port. Check the inclusions list rather than relying on the phrase “transfers included”.

Is there a flight from Padang to the Mentawai Islands?

No reliable scheduled passenger flight currently operates. Plan on the ferry or a private boat.

How long is the transfer from Padang to a surf camp?

Usually a full day: around three to four hours on the ferry, plus a speedboat to camp that can be short or several hours depending on location.

Can I arrange my own transfer and still book a package?

Often yes, especially if you want to spend time in Padang first. Ask the camp to confirm where and when it will meet you.

Who pays if the ferry is cancelled?

It depends on the operator’s terms. Ask before you book, and keep a buffer night in Padang on the way home.
