Which Mentawai surf package is best for advanced surfers? For most, a surf charter between June and August, because it can chase the swell across the Playgrounds, Sipora and the Pagai islands. If you prefer one base, choose a land camp next to the waves you want most: the Playgrounds for heavy rights, Sipora for Telescopes and HTs, North Pagai for Macaronis-area lefts.

Advanced surfers do not need a camp that teaches them anything. They need access: to the right reefs, on the right swell, at the right tide, with as few people as possible. That makes the choice of package more important than the choice of room. This guide answers which Mentawai surf package is best for advanced surfers by comparing package types and regions, then matching them to the kind of surfer you are.

Charter or land camp: the first decision

What matters to you Surf charter Land camp
Chasing the best wave for each swell Strong: the boat moves between regions Limited to waves within the camp’s boat range
Sessions on one specific wave A day or two at each stop Strong: surf it every suitable session
Dawn sessions with few people Strong: you wake up anchored at the break Good if the camp is close to the reef
Comfort and space Cabin living, motion at anchor Beds on land, more space
Typical 2026 price Around USD 1,900 to 4,400 per person for 10 to 12 days Around USD 135 to 800+ per person per night

A charter usually gives an advanced surfer the most quality waves per trip, because the skipper and guide pick the best option for each swell and wind rather than waiting for one reef to turn on. A land camp wins when you know exactly which wave you want and would rather surf it ten times than see five others. Our guide to the best luxury Mentawai surf package compares premium charters with high-end resorts.

The heavy waves, by region

Playgrounds (south of Siberut, north of Sipora)

Kandui Left, a very fast, hollow left over shallow coral; Rifles, with long powerful right-hand barrels; and Bank Vaults, a heavy right-hand reef barrel. These are reached by speedboat from Playgrounds land camps or by charter. The density of breaks makes the Playgrounds strong for regular-footers who want frontside right barrels, while Kandui adds a serious left for goofy-footers.

Sipora

Telescopes and Scarecrows, both lefts in north Sipora, and Lance’s Right, often called HTs, a fast right-hand barrel at Katiet in the south. Sipora land camps reach these with daily boat transfers. “Land-based” does not mean walkable: you will still ride a boat to most sessions.

North Pagai

Macaronis, Greenbush and Thunders, all lefts. Southern land camps cover these with boat transfers, and charters visit when the swell suits. Goofy-footers in particular tend to aim for this zone.

If North Pagai’s lefts are the draw, our Macaronis surf package guide compares land stays and charters there.

Which Mentawai surf package is best for advanced surfers like you?

Once you know the regions, the answer usually comes down to stance, flexibility and who you travel with.

  • You want maximum variety and will follow the swell: book a charter in June to August.
  • You are goofy-footed and love long lefts: a North Pagai land camp, or a charter that spends time there.
  • You are regular-footed and want heavy rights: a Playgrounds camp, or a Sipora camp with HTs access.
  • You are travelling with less experienced friends: a land camp in the Playgrounds or Sipora, where gentler waves sit near the heavy ones.
  • You want a long stay of two weeks or more: a land camp is usually simpler, because most charters run fixed departures of 10 to 12 days.

Timing for advanced surfers

The main season runs roughly April to October. The biggest and most reliable south-west swells usually arrive between June and August, with mid-June to early August historically the strongest. This is when Kandui, Bank Vaults, HTs and the North Pagai lefts show their best and heaviest. Those months also book out first, so for a specific boat or camp, start several months to a year ahead.

The shoulder months of April to May and September to October suit advanced surfers who want quality waves and fewer people, accepting less consistent swell. The wet season from November to March is generally smaller and less predictable.

What to check before you book

  • Boat range: which breaks the camp’s boats reach regularly, and whether distant ones carry a fuel surcharge.
  • Guiding: whether the guide reads swell, wind and tide for advanced surfers or runs a fixed schedule.
  • Group make-up: on a charter, whether your shipmates are at a similar level.
  • Medical support: first-aid training, kit on board, and evacuation plans. Shallow reefs mean injuries happen.
  • Board allowance: how many boards the transfer and boat can take.

Crowds and how packages manage them

Crowding is the main frustration for advanced surfers in peak season. On a good swell in July, several boats and camps can converge on the same well-known reef. Packages handle this in different ways. Charters can leave early, anchor overnight at a break, or move to a less obvious wave when a lineup fills. Land camps close to a reef can surf it at dawn before visiting boats arrive. Ask any operator how they deal with crowds on prime swells, and whether their guides will take you to lesser-known waves when the famous ones are busy. The shoulder months also help: September and October often bring good waves with noticeably fewer people.

Board quiver for advanced Mentawai trips

  • Your standard shortboard
  • A step-up 2 to 4 inches longer for solid days
  • A second board in case of breakage, which on remote reefs is not optional
  • Reef booties if you use them, plus a repair kit and spare fins

Preparing your body and your plan

An advanced package only pays off if you arrive able to surf hard every day. Mentawai trips mean two sessions a day, long paddles against current, and heavy waves breaking over shallow coral. Surfers who arrive after months away from the water often lose the first days to sore shoulders and reef cuts.

  • Paddle fitness. Spend the six to eight weeks before the trip surfing or swimming as often as you can. Paddle endurance matters more than gym strength.
  • Breath-hold and calm. Long hold-downs are part of surfing heavy reef. Practise relaxed breath-holding with a partner, never alone in water.
  • Reef first aid. Bring antiseptic, iodine, sterile dressings and waterproof tape. Clean every cut the same day; infections in the tropics develop quickly.
  • Medical cover. The nearest well-equipped hospital is in Padang, a boat ride and a ferry or speedboat away. A policy that covers surfing and medical evacuation is essential, and many operators ask to see it.
  • Know your exit plan. Ask the camp or skipper where the nearest clinic is, how they reach it, and what communication they carry on the boat.

Respect the lineup as well as the reef. Many waves are shared by boats, camps and local surfers. Waiting your turn and following the guide’s call on when to paddle out keeps sessions safer for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Is a charter always better than a land camp for advanced surfers?

No. A charter gives more variety, but a well-placed land camp gives more sessions on one wave and more comfort. It depends on whether you value range or depth.

Which region suits goofy-footers?

North Pagai and north Sipora have several quality lefts, including Macaronis, Greenbush, Thunders, Telescopes and Scarecrows. Kandui in the Playgrounds is another.

How long should an advanced surf trip be?

Ten to twelve days is a good minimum, because swells arrive in pulses and a short trip can miss them.

Do advanced packages cost more?

Not necessarily. Price follows comfort, location and inclusions rather than surf level. A budget charter can reach the same waves as a premium one.

Can I mix levels on a charter?

It can work if the group agrees, but it is easier when everyone is at a similar level, because the boat chooses waves for the group.

Do I need special insurance for an advanced Mentawai trip?

You need a policy that explicitly covers surfing, including reef breaks in remote areas, and includes medical evacuation. Standard travel policies do not always include surfing, so confirm it in writing before you travel.
