Kandui Mentawai Surf Package: Playgrounds Trip Guide

On this page
A Kandui Mentawai surf package is a stay in the Playgrounds, the cluster of small islands between southern Siberut and northern Sipora, with boat access to Kandui Left and nearby reefs such as Rifles and Bank Vaults. Expect 7 to 11 nights, full board and daily boat trips. Kandui itself is an advanced wave; go April to October.
People search for a “Kandui package” for two reasons. Some want to surf Kandui Left, a left-hand barrel that surf guides consistently rank among the heaviest in the island chain. Others mean the Playgrounds region in general, because the name has become shorthand for the whole zone. This guide covers both: the wave, the area, how a Kandui Mentawai surf package is usually put together, what it typically costs, and whether it suits your level.
Where Kandui and the Playgrounds are
The Playgrounds is the northern surf zone of the Mentawai chain, a scatter of islands and reefs off the southern end of Siberut and north of Sipora. Karangmajat, Nyang Nyang and Masokut are the reference islands most operators use. Kandui Left breaks off the western side of Karangmajat. Descriptions vary slightly between surf guides because the breaks spread across several islands, but “south of Siberut, north of Sipora” is the reliable way to picture it.
The main attraction of the area is density. Several quality reefs sit within a short boat ride of each other, so a camp or boat can pick the best option for the swell, wind and tide on any given day.
What a Kandui Mentawai surf package includes
Most packages in the Playgrounds are sold as fixed blocks tied to transfer days. Inclusions vary by operator, but the typical structure is:
- Accommodation in a land camp, villa or resort on one of the Playgrounds islands.
- Full board and drinking water.
- Daily boat trips to Kandui and the surrounding breaks, usually with a driver who knows the reefs.
- Transfers from Padang, often via the fast ferry to Tuapejat and then a speedboat, or via a direct private boat for groups.
- Surf guiding at many camps.
The longest-established land operation on Karangmajat is Kandui Villas, and many searches for a “Kandui package” mean a stay there. Other camps and villas operate across the wider Playgrounds, although names and operating status change over time. This site is independent and not affiliated with any of them.
The waves of the Playgrounds
| Break | Direction | Character | Typical level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kandui Left | Left | Very fast, hollow, powerful barrel over shallow coral | Advanced to expert |
| Rifles | Right | Long, powerful right-hand barrels | Advanced |
| Bank Vaults | Right | Heavy right-hand reef barrel | Advanced |
| Beng Bengs | Right | Short, punchy and more manageable | Intermediate to advanced |
| Nipussi | Right | More consistent reef wave | Intermediate |
| A-Frames | Left and right | Two-way peak, swell and tide dependent | Intermediate to advanced |
| Burgerworld | Varies | One of the more forgiving options | Intermediate |
Kandui needs a solid south-west swell and often works best around low to mid tide, although that changes with swell size. It has steep take-offs, strong currents and very little water over the reef. Beginners and most intermediate surfers should not paddle out there. The good news for mixed groups is that the Playgrounds has gentler alternatives close by, which is why the area is popular with crews of different abilities. If you want to read more about the right-hand side of the zone, our guide to Rifles covers that wave in detail.
Best time to go
The main Mentawai season runs roughly April to October, with the most dependable dry-season surf from May through October and the biggest, most consistent swells usually between June and August. That is when Kandui breaks at its best and when Playgrounds camps fill first. March and November can produce good windows but are less reliable. From December to February, swells are generally smaller and the weather wetter, which suits surfers who want the gentler Playgrounds waves rather than Kandui itself.
How long and how much
Many Playgrounds camps sell stays of 7, 10 or 11 nights. Premium resorts in the area often require their standard block length, and shorter stays may need approval. Typical 2026 rates across the Mentawais, which apply here too, are:
- Budget and mid-range camps: around USD 135 to 500 per person per night.
- Premium resorts: around USD 350 to 800 or more per person per night, and some quote before government tax and service charge.
Prices vary by operator, room sharing, season and which transfers are bundled. Add flights to Padang, insurance, drinks, tips and the surf levy of IDR 2,000,000 per foreign surfer for each 15-day period. Our Mentawai surf camp price guide shows how these tiers compare in detail.
Getting to the Playgrounds
Padang first
Fly into Padang’s Minangkabau International Airport, usually via Jakarta. Plan a night in Padang before the crossing, because ferries leave early in the morning.
Ferry and speedboat
The common route is the Mentawai Fast ferry from Muaro Padang to Tuapejat, around three to four hours, then a speedboat north to the Playgrounds. That second leg typically takes around three to four hours, depending on the camp’s location, the boat and the sea state. Some operators route guests via Siberut instead.
Direct private boat
Some camps offer a private speedboat from Padang. It is usually priced per boat, so it makes sense for groups and less sense for solo travellers.
Is a Kandui package right for you?
- Yes if you are an experienced barrel rider who wants a base close to a world-class left and several heavy rights.
- Yes if you are travelling with surfers of mixed ability and want gentler waves within a short boat ride.
- Maybe not if you want to explore several regions. A charter covers more ground. Our Mentawai surf trip booking guide compares how camps and boats are reserved.

Frequently asked questions
Can intermediate surfers enjoy a Kandui package?
Yes, as long as they skip Kandui on big days. Nipussi, Burgerworld and other Playgrounds breaks are better suited, and a good camp will match boat trips to the group.
Is Kandui a resort or a wave?
Both names are used. Kandui Left is the wave on Karangmajat, and Kandui Villas is a land resort on the same island. Most people searching for the term want one or the other.
How crowded is Kandui?
It depends on the swell and the number of boats in the area. On good swells in peak season it can be busy. The density of nearby breaks helps spread surfers out.
Do I need a step-up board?
For Kandui, Rifles and Bank Vaults on solid swells, yes. Bring a standard shortboard and at least one longer, thicker board for bigger, hollower days.
How far ahead should I book?
For June to August, start several months ahead. Premium camps with limited rooms can fill earlier still.
