To choose a Mentawai surf package, match four things: your surf level, your travel month, your budget and who is travelling with you. Land camps suit most surfers and budgets, premium resorts suit mixed groups and comfort, and charters suit experienced surfers who want to follow the swell. Then compare quotes on the full cost from Padang.

Mentawai surf packages look similar on paper: a week of surf, meals, boats and a transfer. In practice they differ a great deal in how many waves you can reach, how comfortable you are between sessions, and what is left off the price. This guide compares the main package options side by side and gives a simple order of decisions, so you can narrow a long list to two or three quotes worth taking seriously.

We are an independent planning guide. We do not own camps, resorts or boats. We help surfers compare options and connect with operators that fit.

The main Mentawai surf package options compared

Option Indicative 2026 price Strengths Trade-offs
Budget camp or homestay Around US$950 to US$1,400 per person per week Lowest cost; often family-run; same reefs on a good swell Simple rooms, fewer boats, more organising for you
Mid-range camp Around US$2,000 to US$3,500 per person per week Air-conditioning, daily guided boats, transfers on set days Limited to waves within the camp’s boat range
Premium resort Around US$2,450 to US$5,600 or more per person per week Comfort, low guest numbers, non-surf activities Highest price; taxes and service may be extra
Surf charter Around US$1,900 to US$4,400 per person for 10 to 12 days on shared trips Follows the swell across regions; dawn sessions at anchor Cabin living; fixed departure dates; less for non-surfers

These are planning ranges drawn from published operator rates, not quotes. They move with season, room type and group size.

Step 1: be honest about your surf level

Most Mentawai waves break over shallow coral, and many are fast and hollow. Your level decides more than any other factor which package makes sense.

  • Beginners need a camp with a soft, forgiving wave nearby, patient guiding and ideally a visit in the smaller months.
  • Intermediates do well at camps that reach a mix of waves, and benefit from coaching or video if it is offered.
  • Advanced surfers get the most from flexible boats or a charter in the main swell season.

Step 2: choose your month

The main swell season runs roughly April to October, with June to August the most consistent, the busiest and usually the most expensive. The shoulder months of March to April and October to November bring smaller surf, fewer people and often better value. The wetter months from December to February are the quietest, though some operators reduce services or close. Our Mentawai surf season package guide explains how packages change through the year.

Step 3: decide how you want to live

Camps and resorts give you a bed on land, more space and a fixed set of waves. Charters give you a cabin and a boat that moves every day or two. If you sleep badly in heat, a camp without air-conditioning can be a false economy. If you get seasick, a charter can be a long ten days. If you are travelling with a non-surfer, a resort with sheltered water and a non-surf programme is usually the kindest choice.

Step 4: set a budget for the whole trip

The package price is only part of the cost. Add flights to Padang, at least one Padang hotel night each way, ferry tickets if they are not included, the surf levy of Rp2,000,000 per foreign surfer per 15 days, insurance with evacuation cover, board bag fees and spending money. A cheaper nightly rate that starts at the island harbour can end up costing more than an all-in package from Padang.

Step 5: compare quotes on the same basis

Compare What to look for
Start point Padang airport, Padang hotel or island harbour
Boats Number of boats, surfers per boat, daily range, fuel included
Guiding Guide in the water or on the boat; coaching extra or included
Rooms Twin share or private, fan or air-conditioning
Extras Surf levy, taxes, service charge, alcohol, board hire
Terms Deposit, balance date, cancellation and ferry disruption

Our guide to what Mentawai surf packages include in meals and accommodation goes through each inclusion in detail.

A typical day: camp versus charter

The difference between the two main package styles is clearest in the rhythm of a day. At a camp, you wake on land, eat breakfast, and the guide picks a wave within the boat’s range for the morning session. You return for lunch and rest in the heat, then head out again in the afternoon, often to a different break. Evenings are spent at the camp with the same group each night.

On a charter, the boat often moves overnight or before dawn and you wake anchored at a wave chosen for that day’s swell and wind. You may surf two or three sessions, eat on board between them and move again in the afternoon if another reef looks better. There is more surfing and less down time, but also less space and less to do for anyone who is not surfing.

Questions to ask before you decide

  • Which waves do your boats visit most often in my travel month?
  • How many guests are in camp or on the boat at full occupancy?
  • What is your plan when the nearby waves are flat or too big?
  • What exactly is included from Padang, and what will I pay locally?
  • What happens to my booking if the ferry is cancelled?

Which option fits which traveller

Traveller Usually the best fit
Solo surfer on a budget Packaged budget camp, where the boat is shared with other guests
Group of friends, similar level Whole-boat charter or a small camp with your own boat
Couple, one surfer Mid-range or premium resort with a non-surfer rate
Family Camp or resort with sheltered water and short transfers
Experienced surfer chasing swell Charter in June to August
Intermediate wanting to improve Mid-range camp with coaching, in the shoulder months

Red flags when choosing

  • A list of famous waves with no clear answer on which ones the boats actually reach.
  • No written list of inclusions, or “transfers included” with no detail.
  • A price far below the ranges on this page with no explanation.
  • No answer on how medical emergencies are handled.
  • Pressure to pay in full immediately to a personal account.

Frequently asked questions

Is a camp or a charter better value?

It depends on your group. A full group sharing a whole-boat charter can get very good value, while a single surfer joining a high-end boat may pay more than at a mid-range camp. Compare the full cost per surf day.

What matters most when choosing a Mentawai surf package?

Boat access. The number of boats, how many surfers share them and how far they go decide how many good waves you ride, more than the room or the food.

Can a mixed-ability group share one package?

Yes, if the camp reaches both softer and heavier waves and can split boat sessions. On a charter it works best when everyone is at a similar level.

How many quotes should I compare?

Two or three is usually enough, as long as you compare them line by line from the same start point.
