Which Mentawai Surf Package Is Best for Beginners?

On this page
The best Mentawai surf package for beginners is usually a land camp with a soft, forgiving wave close by, daily coaching from a guide who stays in the water, and travel in the smaller months from roughly October to April. Surf charters and camps built around heavy reef waves suit experienced surfers far better than people still learning.
The Mentawai Islands are famous for powerful reef waves, and most of the publicity shows experienced surfers in heavy barrels. That does not mean newer surfers cannot go. It means the package matters more for a beginner than for anyone else. The right camp, the right month and the right guiding turn a Mentawai trip into a great place to improve. The wrong ones turn it into a week of watching from the boat. This guide explains which Mentawai surf package is best for beginners and how to check a camp before you book.
We are an independent planning guide. We do not own camps or boats. We help surfers find operators that match their level and connect with them.
What “beginner” means in the Mentawais
Most Mentawai waves break over coral reef rather than sand, and the water over the reef can be shallow. Camps that welcome beginners usually mean surfers who can already paddle out, catch unbroken waves and ride along the face, rather than people standing up for the first time. If you have never surfed, a few weeks of lessons on a sandy beach first, closer to home, will make the Mentawai trip far more rewarding and safer.
| Your level | Realistic Mentawai package |
|---|---|
| Never surfed | Learn elsewhere first; a Mentawai camp is not the best place for first lessons |
| Can stand and ride whitewater | Only a camp with a genuinely soft wave and close coaching, in the smaller months |
| Catches green waves, rides along the face | A camp with softer waves nearby, coaching and guided boats |
| Comfortable on reef in head-high surf | Most mid-range camps; you are moving into intermediate territory |
Comparing package types for beginners
| Package type | Fit for beginners | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Camp with a soft wave nearby and coaching | Best | Short boat rides, a wave that forgives mistakes, someone helping you improve |
| Mid-range camp with several boats | Good, if one boat can go to easier waves | Lets the guide split surfers by level |
| Premium resort | Mixed | Comfort and good guiding, but often built around one heavy wave |
| Budget camp with one boat | Mixed | Cheap, but the boat goes where most guests want, which may be too heavy |
| Surf charter | Poor | Boats chase the best swell for experienced surfers; no easy option on big days |
Choose the right months
Season is the biggest lever a beginner has. The main swell season runs roughly April to October, and June to August usually brings the biggest and most consistent waves. Those months are exciting to watch but hard to learn in. The smaller months, from roughly October to April, bring smaller, softer surf and quieter lineups, which is exactly what a newer surfer needs. Some operators reduce services in the wettest months, so check that your camp is open and its boats are running. Our Mentawai surf season package guide explains how packages change through the year.
What to ask a camp before you book
- Which wave will I surf most days, at my level? Ask for a specific answer, not a list of famous breaks nearby.
- How deep is the water over the reef there? Deeper, more forgiving reefs are far safer for learning.
- Will a guide or coach be in the water with me? Watching from the boat is not the same as coaching.
- Can the boats split by level? If the only boat goes to the heavy wave, you will sit out.
- Is board hire available, and what boards? A slightly bigger board helps on Mentawai reefs.
- How many other beginners are booked? A camp full of experienced surfers in peak season may not prioritise you.
- How are reef cuts and injuries handled? Ask about first aid, the nearest clinic and evacuation.
Coaching and guiding
Guiding and coaching are different. A guide chooses the wave and keeps you safe; a coach helps you surf better. For beginners, both matter. Look for camps that include daily coaching or offer it as a reasonably priced add-on, and ask whether video analysis is available, because watching your own surfing speeds up progress. Our guide to whether surf guides are included in Mentawai surf packages explains what each service usually covers.
Staying safe on reef
- Never paddle out alone, and follow the guide’s call on which waves to ride.
- Learn the channel before you surf: where to paddle out and where to exit.
- Fall flat and shallow, and cover your head when you surface.
- Wear a rash vest and consider reef booties.
- Clean every cut the same day with antiseptic.
- Hold travel insurance that covers surfing and medical evacuation.
Budget for beginners
Beginners do not need a premium package, but the cheapest camp is not always best value. A budget camp with one boat heading to a heavy wave every day can mean a week of watching. A mid-range camp with coaching, a soft nearby wave and more than one boat often gives far more time in the water for the money. As a planning guide for 2026, basic camps run around US$950 to US$1,400 per person per week and mid-range camps around US$2,000 to US$3,500, with coaching sometimes extra.

Frequently asked questions
Which Mentawai surf package is best for beginners?
A land camp with a soft, forgiving wave close by, coaching in the water and boats that can split by level, booked in the smaller months from roughly October to April.
Can complete beginners surf in the Mentawais?
It is not ideal. Most waves break over reef, so first lessons are better on a sandy beach elsewhere. Once you can ride along a wave face, a well-chosen camp is a great place to improve.
Is a surf charter suitable for beginners?
Usually not. Charters chase the best swell for experienced surfers and rarely have an easy option on big days.
Do beginner camps include surf lessons?
Some do, and some charge for coaching separately. Ask whether a coach will be in the water with you and how many sessions are included.
