A Mentawai surf package bundles the Padang pickup, hotel, ferry, camp boat, meals and guided surf boats into one price, while booking separately means arranging each leg yourself. Packages usually cost a little more on paper but remove most of the logistics risk. Booking separately can save money for experienced travellers and groups, mainly on accommodation.

Every Mentawai trip needs the same pieces: flights to Padang, a night in the city, the ferry, a boat to your accommodation, a place to stay, food, and a boat to the waves. You can buy those pieces as one package or put them together yourself. This guide compares a Mentawai surf package with booking everything separately, line by line, and explains who each approach suits.

We are an independent planning guide. We do not own camps or boats, and we do not sell flights. We help travellers compare options and connect with operators.

The two approaches side by side

Piece of the trip In a package Booked separately
Airport pickup Usually included Taxi or ride-hailing app
Padang hotel Often included Booked yourself
Fast ferry Often included; tickets bought for you Bought at the port or through an agent, around Rp350,000 one way
Boat from port to accommodation Included Arranged locally or by your homestay
Accommodation and meals Included Homestay or guesthouse; meals sometimes separate
Boat to the waves and guiding Included, shared Hired by the day; costly for one or two people
Surf levy Sometimes included Paid yourself, Rp2,000,000 per foreign surfer per 15 days
Changes when a ferry is cancelled Operator usually helps You handle it

Where booking separately saves money

  • Accommodation. Simple homestays and guesthouses on Sipora cost much less per night than packaged camps.
  • Meals. Eating at local warung, where available, is cheaper than full board.
  • Groups. Three to six surfers splitting a daily boat can bring the per-person boat cost down a long way.
  • Flexibility. You are not tied to a camp’s arrival days or minimum stay.

Where booking separately costs more than it looks

  • The boat. Most good waves need a boat, and a solo surfer or couple pays the whole daily cost. This usually wipes out the saving on accommodation.
  • Extra nights. Without an operator watching the ferry, a cancellation can mean extra hotel nights and missed days.
  • Time. Arranging tickets, boats and food on the ground uses surf time, especially on a short trip.
  • Local knowledge. A camp guide knows which wave works on which swell and tide. A hired boat driver may not.
  • Safety. Packaged camps usually have first aid, life jackets and an emergency plan. With independent boats, you need to check these yourself.

A worked comparison

Take a solo surfer spending seven nights on Sipora. A packaged budget camp might charge around US$950 to US$1,400 for the week with meals, a shared boat and a guide. Booking separately, a homestay room might cost much less, but add meals, a daily boat hired alone, ferry tickets bought at the port, a taxi to the harbour, an extra Padang night and the surf levy, and the total can match or exceed the package, with fewer waves and more organising. For a group of four sharing rooms and a boat, the sums change, and booking separately can come out cheaper.

These figures are planning ranges from published rates and local listings, not quotes. Our Mentawai surf camp price guide has the full 2026 bands.

Who should choose which

Traveller Usually better Why
First-time visitor Package Removes the hardest logistics
Solo surfer Package Shares the boat cost with other guests
Couple, one surfer Package Comfort and activities for the non-surfer
Experienced group of three to six Either; separate can save Shared boats and rooms cut costs
Long stay of several weeks Often separate Weekly packages add up; local deals possible
Short trip of a week or less Package No time to spare on organising

A middle way

You do not have to choose all or nothing. Many travellers book a camp package that starts at the island port and arrange their own Padang hotel and ferry, or book the Padang end through the camp and a homestay for extra days afterwards. Some camps will quote room and meals only, with boats paid per trip. Ask what each operator can unbundle. For how the Padang legs work, see our guide to whether Mentawai surf packages include transfers from Padang.

What a package does not replace

Even a fully packaged trip leaves some things to you. Flights to Padang are almost never included, and neither is travel insurance. Board bag fees on flights are your responsibility, and a package will not change the weather or the swell. A package also does not remove the need to read the terms. Deposits and cancellation rules matter more when you have paid for several legs in one go, so read them before you pay and insure the deposit on the same day.

Booking separately does not remove the need for local help either. Most independent travellers still rely on a homestay owner or a boat driver for ferry news, boat hire and advice on which waves are working. Treat those contacts as part of your plan, not an afterthought.

If you do book separately

  • Confirm ferry days a few days ahead with your accommodation.
  • Agree boat prices in advance, including fuel and waiting time.
  • Check the boat has life jackets and a way to call for help.
  • Pay the surf levy through the proper channel and keep the receipt.
  • Carry enough cash from Padang for the whole stay.
  • Hold insurance with surfing and medical evacuation cover.

Quick facts

  • Packages bundle pickup, hotel, ferry, boats, meals and guiding.
  • Booking separately saves most on accommodation and meals.
  • The daily surf boat is the biggest separate cost for solo travellers.
  • Groups of three to six gain most from booking separately.
  • Fast ferry fare: around Rp350,000 one way.
  • Surf levy: Rp2,000,000 per foreign surfer per 15 days.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Mentawai surf package cheaper than booking everything separately?

For solo travellers and couples, a package is often similar or cheaper once boats and extra nights are counted. Groups sharing boats and rooms can save by booking separately.

Can I book a homestay and hire boats myself?

Yes, especially on Sipora. Agree boat prices in advance, check safety equipment, and expect to do more organising.

Do I need a package to get to the Mentawais?

No. You can take the public fast ferry from Padang and arrange accommodation yourself. A package simply handles those steps for you.

What is the biggest risk of booking separately?

Disruption. If a ferry is cancelled or a boat falls through, you handle the changes yourself, which can cost surf days and extra nights.
