Mentawai surf trips are worth the cost for intermediate and advanced surfers who value wave quality, consistency and short boat rides to world-class reefs, and who travel in a season that suits their level. They are harder to justify for beginners, for very short trips, or for anyone who expects resort comforts at budget-camp prices.

A Mentawai surf trip costs more than most surf holidays in Indonesia. The extra flight to Padang, the ferry, the boat-dependent surfing and the remote logistics all add up, and a mid-range trip from Australia, Europe or the Americas can run into several thousand dollars before you ride a wave. So is it worth it? This page looks honestly at what you pay for, how to think about value per surf day, who gets the most from the money and who might be better off elsewhere.

We are an independent planning guide. We do not own camps or boats. We help surfers decide whether, when and how to go, and connect with operators that fit.

What you are actually paying for

Cost Why it is high in the Mentawais
Getting there An extra flight to Padang, a hotel night and a ferry crossing on top of international flights
Boats Most waves are reached by speedboat, and fuel arrives by sea
Food and supplies Almost everything is shipped from the mainland
Guiding Guides who read swell, wind and tide across many reefs
Surf levy Rp2,000,000 per foreign surfer per 15 days
Insurance Medical evacuation cover for a remote destination

Much of the price is the cost of being remote. The same remoteness is why the lineups are smaller and the coastline less developed than in better-known surf destinations.

Thinking in cost per surf day

The fairest way to judge value is the cost of each day you actually surf. Travel days to and from the islands are long and count as dead time. A trip with a week at camp and two days of travel each way gives about seven surf days for nine or ten days of spending. Stretch the stay to ten or fourteen nights and the travel cost is spread over many more sessions. That is why short Mentawai trips feel expensive, and longer ones often feel like good value.

Boat access matters just as much. A camp with several boats and fuel included can put you on the best wave for each swell, two or three sessions a day. A cheaper camp with one boat and set times may give fewer quality waves for the money.

When it is worth it

  • You are an intermediate or advanced surfer. The waves reward surfers who can handle reef, and the variety within a short boat ride is hard to match.
  • You travel in the right season for your level. June to August for experienced surfers; shoulder months for intermediates.
  • You stay long enough. Ten nights or more spreads the travel cost and catches more swell pulses.
  • You value fewer people in the water. Lineups are generally quieter than at the most crowded mainland breaks, especially outside the peak.
  • You share costs. Groups splitting rooms, boats or a whole charter get far more for each dollar.

When it may not be worth it

  • You are a complete beginner. Most waves break over reef. Learning on sand elsewhere first gives better value.
  • You have less than a week. Travel days take too large a share of the trip.
  • You want resort comforts on a tight budget. Cheap camps are simple; comfortable ones cost more.
  • You are travelling with people who do not surf and do not want a quiet island stay. There is little nightlife, shopping or road travel.
  • Your dates are fixed to the wettest months. Some operators reduce services, and surf is smaller and less consistent.

How to get more value from the same budget

  1. Choose your season to suit your level rather than defaulting to the peak.
  2. Stay longer at a simpler camp rather than a short stay at a premium resort.
  3. Prioritise boat access over room comfort if surfing is the point of the trip.
  4. Travel with friends and share rooms and boats.
  5. Compare packages on the full cost from Padang, including ferry, hotel nights and the levy.
  6. Bring your own boards and a spare rather than relying on hire.

An honest view of the trade-offs

A Mentawai trip asks a lot: long travel days, heat, basic medical access, weather that can cancel ferries and a reef that punishes mistakes. In return it offers consistent swell in season, a remarkable density of quality waves and a pace of life far from busy resort towns. Whether that is worth the money depends on what you want from a surf trip. Surfers who come for the waves, at the right level and in the right season, rarely regret the cost. Those who come for something else often would have been happier elsewhere.

Quick facts

  • Best value: intermediate and advanced surfers on stays of ten nights or more.
  • Main cost drivers: travel to the islands, boats, remote supplies.
  • Judge value by cost per surf day, not nightly rate.
  • Shoulder months often give the best balance of waves, crowds and price.
  • Surf levy: Rp2,000,000 per foreign surfer per 15 days.
  • Insurance with evacuation cover is essential and adds to the cost.

Frequently asked questions

Are Mentawai surf trips worth the cost?

For intermediate and advanced surfers who stay ten nights or more in a season that suits them, usually yes. For beginners or very short trips, the value is harder to justify.

Why are Mentawai surf trips more expensive than other Indonesian surf trips?

The extra flight to Padang, the ferry, boat-dependent surfing and shipped-in supplies all add cost. Those same factors keep the islands remote and the lineups smaller.

What is the cheapest way to make a Mentawai trip worth it?

Stay longer at a simpler camp with good boat access, travel in the shoulder months and share rooms and boats with friends.

Is a charter better value than a camp?

For a full group sharing a whole boat, often yes. For a single surfer joining a premium boat, a mid-range camp may give more value per surf day.
